School/Bus Cancellations and Delayed Openings

The Halifax Regional Centre for Education takes great care when making the decision to cancel schools and/or buses, or delay the opening of school, in the event of severe or inclement weather. When these situations occur, the information is posted on the HRCE’s website at www.hrce.ca , on Twitter at www.twitter.com/HRCE_NS , recorded at 902-464-INFO (4636) and communicated to local radio stations. Families can also subscribe to receive notice of cancellations and delayed openings by e-mail or text message by following the link on the front page (left side) of the HRCE website.

If weather conditions warrant, the HRCE could implement a delayed opening. Delayed openings would be considered when a weather event has concluded but snow clearing or other operations require additional time. Delayed opening may also be considered when the physical plant is experiencing an issue such as a power outage or loss of water and additional time is required to prepare the school to open. If this was to occur, school and Pre-Primary would be delayed by two hours. In our school, this means school would start at 10:10am. Pre-Primary would start 10:10am. If school buses are operating, the expectation will be that students are picked up two hours later than their regularly assigned time pending any weather-related delays. Our lunch and dismissal times will remain at their regularly scheduled times. The EXCEL program will be cancelled for the morning only.

The weather in Nova Scotia is unpredictable so it’s always a good idea for families to have a back-up plan for child care when school is cancelled. WEEK AT A GLANCE

Dear Families,

We hope all families had a wonderful weekend and are staying well and healthy. A reminder that Friday, November 20th is assessment and evaluation day for teachers and there will be no school for students.

Early Morning Drop off:

We would like to remind all of our families of the importance of not dropping children off before supervision begins at 7:55 am. Until this time, the children are not supervised and cannot be left unattended. Thank you for helping to keep all of our students safe.

Covid-19:

With cases continuing to increase within Nova Scotia, we remind all families of the importance of remaining diligent, ensuring that a health check is completed each morning.  If your child is unwell, keeping them at home until they feel better is essential.  Also, your child must be well enough to go without medication for 24 hours before returning to school. Cold/flu medication cannot be administered at school. Thank you for working to help keep all of our students, families and staff safe.

Parking Lot Safety:

With wintery weather on its way, we remind all families of our parking lot procedures. Arrival and dismissal is a very busy time at ALJ, with many busses arriving in a short period of time. Families are not able to enter our parking lot between 7:45 and 8:30 and 1:45 and 2:25. Thank you for working with us to keep our students safe.

Arriving on Time

Now more than ever, it is very important for your child to arrive at school between 7:55 am and 8:10 am. Children transition in to their day much more smoothly when they are here and settled before our instructional day begins. Thank you!

Have a great week and thank you for your continued support!
